MENGUELE MENYENGUE, Maître de Conférences, Département de Science politique, Université de Douala, Cameroun.Résumé: Traverser la Méditerranée est une épreuve, un rite de passage qui permet d’acquérir un statut nouveau au sein des pays d’où ressortissent ceux qui entreprennent et négocient avec succès la redoutable épreuve de la traversée de la Méditerranée. Elle confère le moyen de devenir une élite au sein des communautés et des pays de départ. Sous ce rapport, la traversée de la Méditerranée consacre. En tant que rite de passage, elle offre l’opportunité de changer de statut social et d’émerger comme big man dans la société. C’est pourquoi, en dépit des dangers liés à cette aventure et surtout malgré la grande communication contre cette forme d’immigration clandestine à hauts risques, de nombreux jeunes africains et camerounais en particulier continuent de « tenter leur chance » en s’y investissant à fond. Cette contribution propose de considérer la traversée de la Méditerranée comme un rite de passage. La banque des données collectées et analysée sous le prisme de l’interactionnisme dans ses variantes symbolique et stratégique permet de soutenir que des aspects importants de la traversée de la Méditerranée contribuent à en faire un véritable rite de passage aux effets dialectiques certains dans la capacité de mobilisation de cette aventure risquée dans le contexte africain.

CROSSING THE MEDITERRANEAN AS A RITE OF PASSAGE: A SOCIOANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACH TO MIGRATION IN AFRICA.

Abstract
Crossing the Mediterranean is a challenge or a rite of passage that require specific means to
migrate in order to acquire a new status within the countries from which come those who
undertake and successfully negotiate the dreadful and dangerous adventure of crossing the
Mediterranean. It provides the means to become an elite within the communities and countries
of departure. In this regard, the crossing of the Mediterranean consecrates. As a rite of
passage, it offers the opportunity to change social status and emerge as a big man in society.
This explains why, despite the dangers related to this adventure and especially despite the
great communication against this form of high-risk illegal immigration, many young Africans
and Cameroonians in particular continue to “try their luck” by investing in it. This
contribution suggests considering crossing the Mediterranean as a rite of passage. The data
collected and analyzed under the prism of interactionism in its symbolic and strategic variants
makes it possible to demonstrate that important aspects of the crossing of the Mediterranean
contribute to transform it in such a way that its appears as an authentic rite of passage which
produce certain dialectical effects in the capacity of mobilization of this risky adventure in the
African context.
